Raymond Overholtzer, his wife and mother moved to Baldwin from Wapakenta, Ohio in 1920. Mr. Overholtzer made his living in Baldwin as a guide for hunters and fishermen for nine months of the year, the other three months he worked on his true passion of building pine furniture.
When Raymond would form an idea for a piece of furniture he would keep three basic things in mind, it must be made from pine, it must be useful and have a purpose and it must cost nothing. Every piece of furniture didn't cost a penney and in fact he even made his own glue. The sand paper that was used was actually sanding belts from lumber mills in the area on which he would glue ground glass.
Mr. Overholtzer and three other men built the cabin in the winter of 1940 and 1941. Starting with a 300 lb. door, made from 18 pine logs, the remainder of the cabin was built around that.
